Violet Cupcakes

After making the rose madeleines using rose syrup, I thought it would be a good idea to test out the violet syrup I bought recently in something.
I had to add more violet syrup than I thought throughout the recipe because the flavor was too mild, but I managed to get the right balance eventually! I really enjoyed these cupcakes; violet is one of my favorite flavors so I was really excited to make them. They have a lovely sweet violet taste and the buttercream frosting is very complimenting.
In my rose madeleines post, I mentioned that I love to add rose syrup to cold milk, so I thought, why not try it with the violet syrup. It was absolutely worth it!

For the cupcakes:
makes 12
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 3 tablespoons fine white sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons violet syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons milk

Preheat oven to 400F

In a large bowl, mix the butter, sugar, salt, violet syrup, vanilla extract and eggs with an electric whisk until thickly combined.

Then sift into the bowl the flour, baking soda and baking powder and continue to whisk again until well combined.
Add the milk and whisk for 2 minutes until you have a thick batter.

Line the muffin tin with paper cups and divide the cake batter equally amongst them.
Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes.

When the cupcakes are done, place them on a cooling rack and leave to cool fully.

For the frosting:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 6 tablespoons violet syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 1/2 cups confectioners sugar (approx)
  • 8 drops violet coloring (approx)
With an electric whisk, mix all the ingredients together, adding the confectioners sugar little by little until you have a smooth frosting.
Add the violet coloring a drop at a time while whisking until you get the color you want.

Frost the cupcakes with a piping bag or however you like.
I had some parma violet sweeties so I used them to decorate :)

The frosting looks more on the blue side in these pictures, but they look very violet otherwise, still pretty though I think :)

  11. Hi,

I tried your recipe but got nothing like what you said :( I also used the Monin violet syrup, but despite using double the amount of syrup, I still had little violet flavor. The batter was clearly yellow and not purple-tinted in the least. The frosting was watery and thin. Help?

  12. If you look under the frosting recipe you can see that I added violet coloring to get the purple color.

If 9 tablespoons all together of violet syrup isn't enough for you, you could always add more to the frosting, the flavor was very violet for me.

Add more confectioners sugar to the frosting if it is not thick enough for you.

Let me know if this helps!
